The hot air balloon is the very first "flying" machine of its kind. Created in the late 1700s by the Montgolfier brothers, their observation of heated air rising and steam expanding paper bags while working at their family-owned paper mill sparked curiosity. Such curiosity led to the creation of the hot air balloon.
